Scope and Content Interior. Blacksmith, Inaclete Road, Stornoway, Lewis. Blacksmith, Mr MacLeod, explains the 'swage block' and what it is used for. It is an extra anvil. Other tools can be attached to it to allow different blacksmithing techniques to be carried out. Such blacksmiths shops or smithies or smiddys were once commonplace. They made and repaired agricultural tools, did farrier work (shoeing of horses) and repaired lorries. This is a rare example of a working blacksmith's shop.
