Scope and Content 70 photographs in all: 61 of forts and 3 of cairns on Beattock Hill. (Also unrelated photographs: 1 of excavation at Rough Castle on Antonine Wall, 2 of timbers in crannog at Stewarton, 1 of Camelon, and 1 of a mammoth tusk found at Kilmaurs). Believed to have been taken by Mungo Buchanan during survey and excavations carried out in 1910. Fort numbers and Cairn numbers are those used by Mungo Buchanan in 1910, and may now be classed otherwise, eg as 'settlements'. Pencil annotations on the reverse of most of the prints give some or all of: a serial number, a ‘fort number’ and brief comment. The ‘fort number’ appears to correspond with those on a pencil diagram in a notebook (MS 28/631????). The hill fort on the summit of Beattock Hill appears to be Buchanan’s ‘Fort no.7’. Photographs '35'-'42' (J 3076/28 - 34) have no Fort no. noted; they appear to be of Fort No.2.
