Scope and Content This shows an original 'knocking post' at one of the large doorways (now blocked and a smaller door inserted) at the former City of Edinburgh Council Vehicle Maintenance Depot, East Market Street, Edinburgh. Constructed of stone with a corrugated iron roof, this large plain building was built in the late 1930s on the site of the original North Canongate (Junior) School (built 1879 to designs by Edinburgh Schools Board architect, Robert Wilson (1834-1901)). The depot has operated as a site for the local authority in Edinburgh to carry out maintenance and repairs to fleet vehicles, but is currently (2014) included for demolition as part of the proposed Caltongate regeneration scheme. The building has very few features, but does retain original iron lamps above the two large doors, along with cast iron knocking posts built into the base of the openings. All windows and doorways are boarded up.
