Scope and Content Fort, fortlet and temporary camps at Milton, Dumfries and Galloway This Roman fort, fortlet and temporary camps are at Milton of Tassieholm. This complex, multi-phase site probably dates from the Flavian to Antonine periods and suggests an early, Flavian advance into Scotland. This is an aerial view showing two superimposed forts as cropmarks. The earlier fort did have one unusual feature, which was the in-turning of the ramparts at the gates, giving it a T-shaped plan. The enclosure inside is probably a native settlement. The site was excavated between 1938 and 1950 by J. Clarke. Some pottery, including Samian Ware, was recovered. The excavations did show that the forts had been systematically dismantled before being abandoned. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
