Scope and Content Aerial view of Auldton motte, Dumfries and Galloway The remains of a motte-and-bailey castle lie about 100m south-east of Shieldaig cottage. This small castle was probably erected by the de Brus Lords of Annandale in the 12th century, and occupied by a vassal. Observed from the air, the motte and the outline of the adjoining bailey are clearly visible. Little remains of the rampart and ditch enclosing the bailey, but this aerial photograph shows the V-shaped ditch around the base of the motte. During the reign of David I (1124-53) many Anglo-Norman nobles received estates across southern Scotland. Motte-and-bailey castles served as potent symbols of feudal lordship, as well as being fortified residences. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
