Scope and Content Originally known as Kamesburgh, Port Bannatyne grew up as a fishing village to the north-west of the main town of Rothesay. However, during the 19th century, when Rothesay's popularity as a tourist destination and a pleasant place to live by the seaside was at its peak, the town stretched out to join up the coastal strip between Port Bannatyne in the north-west and Ascog in the south-east. This pair of two-storeyed, four-in-a-block houses at 18-20 High Road are similar to many late 19th-century properties built throughout Rothesay. With full-height canted bay windows, the upper flats are reached by stairs on the side elevations, enclosed within small gabled porches. As with many of the larger properties constructed during Rothesay's boom period, these may have been used as guest houses.
