Scope and Content On black-edged paper. From Newcastle, accompanying his paper on the Maes Howe runes. Has also sent a copy to Farrer who is still in Orkney excavating. Has previously sent Petrie a copy of his paper on leprosy and Dr Haigh's paper on runes. Seeks Petrie's opinion on details of the Maes Howe runes. Refers to Rafn, Munch and Stephens: 'We shall have a delightful little controversy soon about the matter, carried on with all the fury & bluster with which Antiquaries discuss these matters'. Requests that Petrie buy up to thirty shillings worth of 'Stromness fossil fish'. 'I wish I was now on the banks of the Loch of Stenness instead of being shut up in this black dusty town.'
