Scope and Content Fort at Walls Hill, Renfrew The Walls Hill fort sits on top of a steep-sided hill overlooking farmland. It is overlooked by higher ground except to the NW. The southern third of the fort has been cultivated and the defences removed. The best remains are to the north. This is an aerial view of the site. The defences comprise of a single stone-faced rampart up to 3.5 m thick. The original entrance was to the NNE. No houses have been found within the rampart. The site was excavated in 1956. Fragments of Iron Age pottery and jet or shale was found. It has been suggested that this was the capital for a local tribe - the Damnonii. There is very little supporting evidence for this and more excavation is needed. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
