Scope and Content Excavation archives comprise drawings, negatives, photographs, slides, digital media and reports. Notable recent projects include the excavation of a medieval monastery dating to the seventh or eighth century on the island of Inchmarnock, near Bute (2008). This dig uncovered the largest assemblage of inscribed slate from anywhere in the British Isles and is of particular significance because of its implications for monastic schooling and design. Between summer 2007 and spring 2008, in partnership with Pre-Construct Archaeology, Headland excavated seven sites along the route of the new M74.

Archive History Excavation archive material is deposited at RCAHMS by Headland as projects are completed.

System of Arrangement Material is grouped by excavation site and organised roughly in the chronological order by which it was received.

Administrative History Headland Archaeology Ltd, now Headland Group Ltd, was established in 1996 by Stephen Carter, Tim Holden, Chris Lowe and Magnar Dalland as a commercial company committed to serving the construction industry and was based at the Albion Business Centre, Edinburgh. In partnership with SUAT Ltd, Headland undertook the archaeological excavations at the Scottish Parliament in 1998, one of the largest excavations ever in Scotland. In 2002, the UK Company moved to Jane Street, Edinburgh in order to accommodate growth. A second UK office was opened in Glasgow’s St Vincent’s Place in 2005, which moved to larger premises at Payne Street, Glasgow in 2008 following the successful completion of a project on the M74. A wholly owned subsidiary was set up in Midleton, Co. Cork in 2002 at the Europa Enterprise Park. The directors of this subsidiary were Colm Moloney, who joined the company as a director in 2000, Russel Coleman, who joined as a project manager in 2000, and Holden. This office moved to Wallingstown Business Park, Little Island in 2007. In the same year, a second Irish office was opened in Galway on the Liosbaun Industrial Estate, Galway, managed by Ross MacLeod. In 2008, a major restructure was undertaken which saw the creation of Headland Group Ltd and two equal subsidiaries, Headland Archaeology (UK) Ltd and Headland Archaeology (Ireland) Ltd. At this time new directors were appointed to the subsidiary boards. In the United Kingdom: Russel Coleman (CoB), Andrea Smith, Simon Stronach & Tim Holden (MD); and in Ireland: Russel Coleman (CoB), Ross MacLeod, Damian Shiels & Colm Moloney (MD)
