Scope and Content Drawing in sketchbook made during a tour of Orkney and Shetland in August 1801, likely by James Skene of Rubislaw. General sketch view of the town, titled 'Kirkwall Capital of Orkney. The Carric-Thirsa of Ossian. August 1801'. The view is dominated by St Magnus Cathedral and the Earl's and Bishop's Palaces, with Wideford Hill in the distance and a single-span bridge overthe Papdale Burn in the foreground. In the left foreground is a building with a stone-slab roof. A male figure and dog walk towards the bridge and two male and two female figures shepherd sheep towards the town.
