Scope and Content Aerial view of Stirling Castle, Stirling This aerial view from the south, taken in 1971, shows the castle on its rocky hilltop. On the right is the Esplanade, and to its left are the outer defences built between 1708 and 1714 to counter a possible Jacobite uprising. The round-towered gateway of the forework leads to the Lower Square, with the palace block to the left. Above the quadrangular palace block is the Upper Square, with the Chapel Royal of 1594 on the far side, and the great hall (now harled), built by James IV in about 1500. To the left, perched on top of the cliff, is the 'King's Old Building', incorporating the earliest surviving royal apartments in the castle. Stirling Castle is strategically situated on the best route by land between lowland and highland Scotland, and the rock on which it sits has probably been inhabited since prehistoric times. It was both fortress and royal palace, and has some of the best of both types of architecture in Scotland. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
