Scope and Content Entrance front, Trumland House, Rousay, Orkney Islands The house was designed in a Scottish Jacobean style. Three storeys high with an attic, it was built from rubble which was originally left exposed, but was later harled. It has crowstepped gables, and a round-arched door over which there is a rope-moulding. At first Bryce had said a good house could be built for General Traill-Burroughs for less than £3,000. However, the actual cost of the house was £11,887, despite the fact that plans for a tower and a west entrance and lodge were cancelled. This is the north entrance to Trumland House on Rousay in Orkney. It was built in 1872-3 for General Frederick William Traill-Burroughs and designed by the architect, David Bryce (1803-76). The site for the house was chosen specially as it was sheltered enough for trees to grow. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
