Scope and Content Aerial view of East Barns, East Lothian Dated 1847, East Barns Farm was the property of the Hay family in the 19th century and includes a cart shed, granary and chimney stack arranged in a line running north-east. The buildings are of random rubble with droved grey ashlar dressings and margins, grey slate roofs and lead flashings. This aerial view of the farm, from the east, shows the farmhouse at the bottom of the photograph. The surrounding countryside is prime arable land with hay bales in the fields. The cart shed range is to the right in this view, with the engine house and chimney at the end. The other ranges are more dilapidated. The evangelical ministers of the 19th century greatly disapproved of those from the Highlands and Islands going to help gather the harvest in the south not just because they were disrespecting the Sabbath, but because most were unmarried women who spent their wages on 'superfluous finery'.
