Scope and Content View from south of the 'Green Bedroom' on the first floor of No 34 Esplanade Terrace, Joppa, Edinburgh Esplanade Terrace, a row of flat roofed, bay-windowed holiday residences were built c.1890, when Joppa was popular as a holiday resort. No 34 was originally owned by a painter/decorator, and his lavish painted interiors survive to this day. This room has a beautifully painted and gilded frieze with quotations from Omar Khayyam, among others. The room is painted with Greek key designs, stylised flowers called 'anthemia' and rosettes. Two Victorian dressing tables stand in the room. 'The Rubiayat of Omar Khayyam', the work of an 11th-century Persian poet, mathematician and philosopher was freely translated in 1859 by Edward FitzGerald. It became hugely popular, and is quoted in the frieze of this room. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
