Scope and Content Detail of painted door and wallpaper in the 'Rose Bedroom' on the first floor, No 34 Esplanade Terrace, Joppa, Edinburgh Esplanade Terrace is a row of seafront cottages built as holiday lodgings c.1890. The houses have flat roofs and double bay windows, with small front gardens. No 34 was owned and decorated by a professional painter/decorator. This photograph shows the delicately painted door with its portraits of elegant ladies, gold scrollwork, cherubs and roses. The doorframe is also decorated with flowers. The picture rail has a dentil motif, above a gold and cream coloured wallpaper. The Victorian's love of rich ornamentation is much in evidence in this house. It retains much of its Victorian interior decoration, including high quality gilt friezes with mottoes, panelling, decorative wall paintings and fitted furnishings.
