Scope and Content Homesteads at The Clash, Callander The area of the Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park contains a rich variety of archaeological sites and historic landscapes, which continue to have a major impact on the environment today. Prehistoric settlements are revealed here as cropmarks. In the centre of the photograph three intersecting rings mark the lines of timber palisades around Iron Age homesteads. Above there is a 'date-box shaped' building, possibly a Neolithic house. The different rates of growth of cereal crops can reveal buried archaeological sites as cropmarks. Crops growing above buried walls will ripen and turn golden more quickly, while those over backfilled ditches will grow more slowly and stay green longer. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
