Scope and Content Fort and palisaded enclosure, White Hill, Scottish Borders This large fort crowns the summit of a high ridge overlooking the valley of the Kilbucho Burn. Oval on plan, it is defended by a single rampart. Within the interior two grooves are visible, marking the courses of two concentric palisade trenches. Taken from the south, in winter, this aerial view clearly shows the line of the rampart with its external ditch, but only traces of the palisade trenches. Elements of outlying earthworks of unknown date can be seen on both the left and right of the fort. Large numbers of forts are found throughout the Border counties and into Lanarkshire. Most were occupied in the middle centuries of the first millennium BC and some, as here, reveal evidence that they were preceded by timber-built fortifications. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
