Scope and Content Detail of a fireplace in Bridgend House, Main Street, Perth Bridgend House, built c.1820, was also known as 'Ruskin's House', as the Victorian artist and art critic John Ruskin (1819-1900) visited his aunt and uncle there during his boyhood. This large villa with its Doric columned porch was demolished c.1966. This fireplace has a wooden surround with applied Classical motifs of Goddesses, a basket of flowers, and a swag of foliage. It dates from c.1820. The inner part of the fire is of cast iron, with later Victorian tiles set into panels. John Ruskin also stayed with his aunt at No 10 Rose Terrace, where she moved to after the death of her husband. Ruskin was later married in Perth, in Bowerswell House, on the 10th April 1848.
