Scope and Content Detail of the full-height wardrobes in the first-floor 'French Empire Dressing Room', No 34 Esplanade Terrace, Joppa, Edinburgh No 34 Esplanade Terrace is part of a long row of holiday houses facing the beach. It was built c.1890. Originally owned by an accomplished painter/decorator, its rooms feature a variety of painted decorations. This photograph shows the fitted wardrobes in the dressing room. The varnished wooden wardrobe has hooks instead of a rail, which is more usual today. Many items would be laid out in drawers, rather than hung up. The shelves may have been for hats. Dressing rooms were used in Victorian times to accommodate the fine clothes worn by wealthy people. Clothes would be laid out by a servant, and assistance given in dressing. People often changed their clothes several times a day. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
