Office of Works, Edinburgh'. Stamped on the reverse: 'Francis Caird Inglis, Portrait Studio. Rock House, Calton Hill, Edinburgh'. SCRAN: Exhibition room in the Royal Scottish Academy, The Mound, Edinburgh The Royal Scottish Academy was designed by William Playfair in 1822-6 for the Board of Manufactures and Fisheries to accommodate the Royal Society, the Institution for the Encouragement of the Fine Arts, and the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland. The interior was altered to suit the Royal Scottish Academy in 1909-11 as part of an extensive re-organisation. There are now six large rooms for exhibitions, and a set of upper-level galleries designed in a Classical style. In 1890 the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland left for the National Portrait Gallery in Queen Street. In 1909-11 the Royal Society moved to premises at No 22-24 George Street, and the interior was altered to suit the Royal Scottish Academy. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
