Scope and Content Edinburgh Castle from the air Edinburgh Castle is, in reality, a complex of buildings dating to many different periods. The oldest building today is St Margaret's Chapel, lying at the centre of the photo. This was built in the 12th century by Margaret's son, David I. The main Palace buildings lie to the left on two sides of a quadrangle and date to the 16th and 17th centuries, with the Queen Anne Building, built in the 18th century, and the Scottish National War Memorial, from the 20th century, on the other two sides. At the rear of the photo lies a group of buildings dating to the 18th century when the Castle was much altered to house the garrison. More recent additions include the esplanade and main entrance, at the bottom, which were added in the 19th century. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
