Scope and Content Drawing showing plan of Kilchiaran Chapel, Islay, Argyll and Bute This medieval chapel at Kilchiaran on the west of Islay's Rhinns peninsula, is dedicated to St Ciaran, hence the name 'Kil-(chapel)-chiaran'. Roofless by 1794, it was partly restored and reconstructed by the Islay Historic Buildings Works Group in 1972-3. This shows the basic layout of the small chapel with an 18th-century burial-enclosure adjoining the east gable wall. The floor of the chancel is slightly higher than the nave, and is reached by two steps set within a low wall across the chapel. The chapel was entered by a doorway in the north wall of the nave, while the chancel also had its own entrance in the south wall. There appears to have been a small window next to this entrance, but this was blocked during the chapel's reconstruction. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
