Scope and Content Plans of Auchtermuchty Town-House, Fife Auchtermuchty Town-House was built in 1728, after the burgh council decided they needed a 'good tolbooth with a clock and bell and steeple for containing the same'. It was paid for by borrowing from local tradesmen and the kirk session. The Town-House has been changed since it was built, especially in the 19th century when the rear was extended. By 1840, the cells were not used very often so the council rented out two of the ground-floor rooms as shops. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
