Scope and Content Fort, Toftcombs, Lanarkshire This fort is situated on the east end of a ridge. Roughly circular on plan, its defences comprise an inner wall accompanied by two ramparts with external ditches. A stone-walled round-house with an internal ring-ditch is visible in the interior. Viewed from the south-west in winter, the inner wall and both ramparts can be seen poking through the snow on this aerial photograph. The outer rampart diverges from the other defences on the left before turning back to flank the west entrance way. Large numbers of forts are found throughout the Border counties and into Lanarkshire. Most were occupied in the middle centuries of the first millennium BC and many, as here, contain surface traces of the stances of round-houses. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
