Scope and Content Aerial view of Broch of Mousa, Shetland Islands The Broch of Mousa, which may to date to around 100AD, is about 13m in height and is one of the best examples of a broch in Scotland. Due to the height of the broch any inhabitant would have had an excellent view of the surrounding area of land and sea, enabling them to spot any potential raiders. The broch has an outer wall and an inner wall, constructed of flagstones from the beach. Within the walls, around 3m up from the ground, there are six galleries one on top of the other, separated by roofs and floors of stone. These galleries may have been used for storage. The entrance to the broch can be seen to the right. Shetland, situated to the north-east of Scotland, consists of over 100 islands, but only 20 are inhabited. It is thought people have lived in Shetland for 5,500 years, the first settlers being Neolithic farmers who may have travelled from the Orkney Islands. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
