Scope and Content Aerial view of East Barns, East Lothian Dated 1847, East Barns Farm was the property of the Hay family in the 19th century and includes a cart shed, granary and chimney stack arranged in a line running north-east. The buildings are of random rubble with droved grey ashlar dressings and margins, grey slate roofs and lead flashings. This is an aerial view of the farm, which is orientated north-west, showing the farmhouse to the right. The farm is situated in prime arable land and the surrounding fields are dotted with hay bales. The cart shed range is uppermost in this view with the engine house and chimney at the end (centre). The other ranges are more dilapidated. Migrant workers from the Highlands were much employed by Lowland farms to gather the harvest. In 1827, it was related that one of the wickednesses to be encountered in Argyll was the sight of bands of natives walking to or returning from the Lothian harvest, carrying large bundles on their backs, on the Sabbath.
