Drawing showing masons' marks from Culquhanny and Kinnaird Castle.

DC 53763/7

Description Drawing showing masons' marks from Culquhanny and Kinnaird Castle.

Date c. 1857 to 1861

Collection Records of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, Edinburgh, Scotland

Catalogue Number DC 53763/7

Category Prints and Drawings

Copies DP 238885

Scope and Content Undated ink drawing annotated 'Culquhanny castle in Strathdon had probably been built during the 16th century. Little of it remains, and with the exception of some door and window lintels(upon all of which the following mark appears), it had been built of the rough undressed boulders of the district. It is a curious fact that the castle should have been partly built upon an "e(unclear) house" or w(unclear)t'. 'Kinnaird Castle in the Carse of Gowrie is probably a building of much the same period as those of Inverquharity or Auchenleck'. This description suggests that the Kinnaird Castle described here is the one in the parish of Kinnaird rather than the one described in the Mason's Marks Project in the parish of Farnell.
