Scope and Content Originally known as Kamesburgh, Port Bannatyne grew up as a fishing village to the north-west of the main town of Rothesay. However, during the 19th century, when Rothesay's popularity as a tourist destination and a pleasant place to live by the seaside was at its peak, the town stretched out to join up the coastal strip between Port Bannatyne in the north-west and Ascog in the south-east. This shows the single-storeyed red brick sheds which were built by the Rothesay Tramways Co Ltd in 1902 to house and repair the trams which ran between Rothesay and Port Bannatyne. Similar in style to railway engine sheds, this long building has large arched windows on three sides to let as much light into the building as possible. The arches above the windows are picked out in yellow brick, and the windows have all been painted blue, the corporate colour of the bus company which currently uses the sheds. With the development of the horse-drawn tramway between Rothesay town centre and Port Bannatyne in 1879, the outer reaches of the town became more accessible. When the tramway was extended out to Ettrick Bay in 1905, this made the countryside of the island accessible too. The site of the tram depot was adapted for the replacement bus service when the tramway closed in 1936.
