Scope and Content Letters to Petrie concerning the Skaill hoard of Viking-Age silver. 1. From John Scarth, Stromness, 13 March 1858. Has spoken to a lad who has a few pieces in his possession, which he has loaned to Scarth. 2. From D Smith, Newark, Sandwick, 18 March 1858. Some of the articles were lost in the garden by his small boy but most have been recovered. He has six armlets. There was a pin but it is still lost. Dr Watt of Skail has an armlet. 3. From Edward Irvine, Quoyloo, 19 March 1858. William Brass will bring silver items to Kirkwall. As landowner Irvine would like to keep some of the articles 'as a memorial'. He suspects that Smith, Irvine and Moar have not handed over all that they found. Mrs Moffat will be bringing in one of the coins to Kirkwall. 4. Petrie's receipt for silver objects from David Moar, Kingshouse, at Sandwick 15 March 1858, witnessed by Francis Taylor: 2 large brooches, 1 twisted torc + frag, 2 armlets, 1 small bar, 1 broken pin-head, 2 frags. 5. Petrie's receipt for silver objects from D Smith, at Sandwick 15 March 1858, witnessed by Francis Taylor: 1 large brooch, 3 twisted torcs, 9 plain armlets, 1 frag ring, 1 thin broken armlet, 1 frag. 6. Petrie's receipt for silver objects from Jas Irvine, Skailbreck, at Sandwick 15 March 1858, witnessed by Francis Taylor: 3 large and 1 small brooches, 2 torcs + frag, 1 plain armlet, 1 pin-head, 8 frags. 7. Petrie's receipt for silver objects from William Brass, Quoys, at Kirkwall 20 March 1858, witnessed by Jas Hebden: 7 torcs + 5 frags, 1 brooch, 5 armlets, 1 pin-head, 10 frags. 8. Petrie's receipt for silver objects from David Smith, Newark, Sandwick, by the hand of William Brass, at Kirkwall 20 March 1858, witnessed by David Sinclair: 6 armlets. 9. Petrie's receipt for silver objects from David Linklater, Sandwick, by the hand of William Brass, at Kirkwall 20 March 1858, witnessed by David Sinclair: 2 armlets, 1 hook, 1 pin-head, 5 frags coins.
