Scope and Content Temporary camp at Marcus, Angus This Roman temporary camp is at Marcus. It is built on a level terrace on the left bank of the River South Esk, to the N of Marcus House. Part of the defences can still be seen at ground level. There is an annexe on the SW side. This is an aerial view of the site. Cropmarks show the position of two of the camp's sides and a corner. On the lower side, below the modern road, is an entrance. In front of it is a titulum, a small ditch which helped protect the gateway. The site has been excavated. A short section of the NE side can be seen as a shallow ditch. This section appears to contain one of the camps four gates. The camp has been associated with the campaigns of the Emperor Septimius Severus. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
